As cable and DSL Internet connections are more affordable you may be taking advantage of the speed it offers. The problem is, only one computer can use it, and you may have two or more. This is where a network can come in handy. If you don't mind wires, and the the computers are close together, this is the securest way to set you network up. If you have computers around the house, or a laptop and want to rome, you definitely need a wireless network. The problem with this is that anybody within range of your wireless router will have access to you Internet connection. That does not sound bad, but if they get an address to get an Internet connection they are in your network, and that means they have access to your computers. This has to be avoided.
When you hear about wireless networks you hear terms like SSID, Wep, WPA2, TKIP, AES, MAC Filtering, DHCP Server and the list goes on. You can go through a wizard to set the router up, but is it right? You need somebody to put all of this into plain English for you.
This is where I can be your IT Solution. I will evaluate what you want to do with your network and how it will be used. By that I mean do you have kids in school with laptops that want to use the Internet while they are on break or vacation? Will anybody ever have to have access to your Internet connection other than you? Did you set your computers up with all the default settings? Do you have passwords on your computers? There are a ton of questions that need to be answered to come up with a plan for a secure network.
I charge $60 an hour. A secure network can usually be setup in an hour with two computer accessing the Internet. You can share printers and let the computers share resources with each other.
